On Friday night Carter had his annual date with Grandma Vicki and Grandpa Carl. Every year Cali and Carter get a story book with a theme for a date that grandma and grandpa will take him on during the year. Last Christmas Carter got a book about the circus, and as promised, a date to the circus.
We left right after he got out of school on Friday and headed to SLC. We stopped in Evanston for some gas, and nice disposable camera that Carter could capture some memories with.
He was so excited. He got to pick a restaurant for dinner {McDonalds}, see many wonderful sights at the circus, and came home with a fancy light-up sword.
So, please enjoy the circus, through the lens of a $7.99 disposable camera and a delighted little boy!
He was very concerned as to whether the circus would show African elephants or Indian elephants. He explained to me the difference between the two, and later reported that they were indeed Indian elephants.
Here's a cute one of Carter and his sword. Look carefully in the foreground. He's there. When I took the camera to Walmart to be developed they printed the pictures as well. He is so thrilled to have the pictures in their own envelope. I think he is going to take them to school on Wed. for a bonus show and tell.

It Takes a Long Time to Grow an Old Friend
Maybe it was the three legged race {which we dominated} in 2001, or maybe it was our common disdain for whiny employees, it could've been our awesomeness and attractiveness, or quite possibly our matching sense of humor. Regardless, Roz is one of my best friends ever. We worked at the University of Utah together for about 10 years. We both had a lot of changes in our lives during that time, and became better friends through the years. In short, or according to Grey's Anatomy, she is my "person". As in, if she commits a murder...I bury the body, and visa versa.
On Friday I was able to stop by her house to visit with her, her husband Jake, and 2 year old Cade. Jake was kind enough to watch Caleb climb up and down the steps, and Cade entertained Bethany while we talked. Roz has had a rough few months, but now has the most precious baby girl. I got to hold {almost 7 lb} Daphne...She seemed so small next to Caleb. I wanted to take her home, I would have even settled for Cade. Cade told us many interesting and funny things during our visit, he even showed us his "button" and his "nickles".
Our visit was too short, especially compared to all our long talks at work. However, I was able to give her the quilt I made for Daphne and we made it out of there without any kidnapping! Next time...

Just So You Know
If ever you are farming, and dinosaurs invade your farm...
And the dinosaurs are being operated by a very serious sound effect producing 4.85 year old...
And a Polly Pocket comes to your rescue, just as the dinosaur eats all your crops and leaps over your barn...
And to your wide eyed surprise a small Fisher Price person by the name of "Chris" or "Ryan" {it goes back and forth} comes to your rescue...
Just know that it's a Sunday afternoon!

Good Bye Adenoids, Hello Ear Tubes
Last Friday Caleb had his adenoids removed and ear tubes placed in his ears. Too many ear infections, way way way too many runny noses, and more congestion than any one child should endure in a lifetime, landed this guy in surgery. Our favorite ENT Dr. Tagge {did Cali's tubes, tonsils, and adenoids + Carter's mouth surgery as a baby} suggested that it was time for Caleb to be able to breath without antibiotics!
On Friday morning we left RS at 5am, arrived at Primary Children's Medical Center at 7:45am for our check-in time. After paperwork, check-ups, cool hospital jammies and socks, we waited in a deluxe toy extravaganza of a waiting room. By this time Caleb had been without food for 12+ hours. Good for surgery, not good for a hungry boy. He managed to stay in good spirits {see above photo for proof} as long as Christian and I passed him back and forth, found cool toys for him to look at, and blew a million bubbles in his face.
When it was time to go with the doctor I tried to give him a kiss good bye, but he dove into her arms and didn't look back. He probably thought she was going to feed him!
During his 20 minute procedure, Bethany greeted us at the waiting room for a friendly visit. She was "working" but managed to get in some good hanging out too. I met a woman in the waiting room who had been at the hospital as early as we had. She said that she was starving. Like a kindly citizen, I offered her a granola bar and banana. To which she replied, "that aint real food, what I really need is a Pepsi One and a cigarette!" When the hospital cart came around stocked with bagels and donuts, they didn't bring any Pepsi One or a cigarette....weird.
Anyway, Dr. Tagge stopped by to tell us that Caleb was a champ. His adenoids were full of puss and snot leaking into his ear canals. I think he actually called it a "reservoir of gunk", I appreciated that kind of description as I am the one who sucks this kid's "reservoir" out every day.
I was then paged to meet Caleb in the recovery where, apparently, he had gone ballistic. Or as the kindly older nurse said, "this kid is PISSED OFF!" It took two grown men to hold him down, he ripped his IV out 5 times, and had his leg in a splint so he couldn't do it again. The oxygen monitor was strapped to his foot with a roll of surgical tape...He'd pulled it off a few times too. He drank 8+ oz of juice, threw the bottle and tried to throw himself on the floor. He kicked at the nurse while she was trying to hold him, caught his toe in the tie of her scrubs, untied her scrubs, which she nearly lost. He got tangled up in my necklace and broke it {rookie mistake wearing one in the first place}, beads flying everywhere!
He finally calmed down with the help of some more juice, and of course, his dad. Christian held him while I visited with Bethany and my dad's cousin Faye who works at PMC. It was fun to catch up with her, and we had a nice visit. Soon it was time to go, they released us and our "baby sumo wrestler" aka "tiny lion" as the recovery nurses called him. By then he was back to his sweet self, we loaded up Cali and Carter who had been playing at Carl's apartment downtown {they were NOT happy to see us and did NOT want to go home}. We promised them treats and bribed them to get in the car, then shut and locked all the doors and drove home. We made it home by 4pm, and were pretty much exhausted.
Good news! Caleb is doing much better. Short recovery, not so many boogers, and he's back to his normal self.
{Ps. and FYI: I just noticed that the Pepsi One/Cigarette lady is accidentally and subtly featured in the background of picture one on this post}

Happy Helpers
As you can tell by the looks of my kitchen, I have more help than I know what to do with. It's fairly entertaining to watch Caleb empty an entire kitchen in a few minutes. Thankfully I have Carter around to help me put it all back together.
If you've ever witnessed the workings of a squirrelly 10 month old, you know that smile, and where this meowzer is going...
Check to make sure no one is looking...That's a very good idea for many stunts.
Where else to go, but in the drawer...with the muffin pans. I hope these hinges and sliders survive this kid.
Maybe I should be on my way to the store to buy some child-proofing-things...?

All Day
Now that Cali is back in school all day, and Carter is gone to preschool three afternoons a week....
This is pretty much all I do.... All day long.... Nothing else really....
No laundry, no dishes, no vacuuming, and hell no homework, this is it...So if you need me, forget it! I'm really busy!

Worth At Least a 1000 Words
If a picture is worth a thousand words, then what is a picture of a picture worth? Is it 2000? I don't know, and I've been studying learning philosophies this week, so I feel extra inquisitive about the world around me.
Regardless, I finally hung something up. We've only lived here 18+ months so it was about time. I still have a few more plans for this wall and some of the surrounding walls of this house. Baby steps...

Proof
...that I make an awesome grilled cheese sandwich. Check out these faces, they don't lie. I can grill cheese to perfection. Hey, we all have our talents.
Carter's First Day of {pre} School
Thanks to the Diary of Wimpy Kid books and movie, Carter is convinced that he is in middle school. So, instead of arguing....we're just going with that for now. Although I can't think of anything worse than middle school, he'll have to find that out later. In the meantime, he's happy as a clam going to {middle} pre school. He is really turning into a handsome man.
And smart, I might add, he's already got plans for college...And they apparently don't involve me driving him there. At least he's thinking a head...right?

All too Familiar
If this sight looks familiar, it's because you hate doing laundry too. Or, it's because you put off folding until the last second and then pray to the laundry gods that someone else will put it all away. After our Labor Day/End of Summer/Starting School extravaganza I had a lot of catching up to do. I also had A LOT of help....
And by "help" I actually mean set-backs. Just look at this kid. Can you see him taunting me, laughing at me, crawling away from me. The trail of clean laundry is enough to make me scream. But how can you scream at a face like this.

Finally!
Cali was so excited to be going back to school. She loves school and everything that comes with it. I do too...minus the homework. But, so far, so good. Her shirt says it all...THIS GIRL ROCKS!
The outfit...hours of contemplation on what to wear resulted in this Cali style.
Cali found her teacher, jumped in line....and that was that!

Unprepared
Carter was unprepared for the less-than-warm first day of school extravaganza. Something about me saying, "Carter, get dressed" translated into a t-shirt, shorts, and a mad dash to the car with no shoes. He was not a happy camper when he realized it was fall...and cold.
So like any good mother, I gave him the shirt off my back...Literally. Luckily for me {and the entire population of Sage Elementary} I had another one on underneath {see, I knew it was cold}.
Mother and son of the year award...I'm just sayin'.

A Close Second to Christmas Eve...
...FIRST DAY OF SCHOOL EVE. No? Maybe you don't feel the excitement like we do...Maybe you do? As a kid I remember being as excited and sleepless for First Day of School Eve as I was for Christmas Eve. Apparently the tossing and turning with excitement didn't prove to be too helpful in the learning department. Regardless, we LOVE school around here, and the kids didn't even mind the earlier bedtime!

This Blog Needs Some Help
We are heading into the home stretch of our summer vacation. Which means, a lot of busyness! We still have school clothes to buy, supply lists to stock up on, all while enjoying the last few official days of summer. I started school last Monday which really puts a damper on random trips to the pool and afternoon naps.
Cali and Carter are both so excited for school to start. I would be lying if I didn't admit, I'm pretty excited too. These two angels have spent many hours in time-out this past week, and are very very familiar with the inside of their room at the point. I'm hoping they return to normal very soon. If not, you may need to visit me at UNI {University of Utah Neuropsychiatric Unit}, I've got my room all picked out.
In the very near future I plan on updating this lovely blog with more of the usual...Until then, I'll be referring fights and reading text books.
