There are several clothing and shoe stores in Rock Springs, and I've had fruitful shopping days at all of them. However, being away from some of my favorites has caused me to become a pretty good online shopper. Don't get me wrong, I've ordered things online before, and I can find my way around the world wide web. It's just something about paying $5.00 for shipping vs. driving 2.5-3.0 hours that calls to me. Not to mention the promo-codes and the joy of getting something other than bills in the mail. Now, I've had a lot of profound thoughts in my life. For example, after indulging myself in some delicious Easter candy. I paused to muse, "whoever invented Easter was a genius." As soon as I said it, I knew it was stupid, but it sounded so much more profound in my head. I digress, I was in the shower the other day and the thought came to my mind, "what did people do before online shopping???" Followed by an equally brilliant thought, "Catalogs!!"
All this enlightenment reminded me of my grandma who was a master catalog shopper. She would order shoes, blouses, skirts, socks, you name it. She had a friend in Fountain Green who would alter or adjust her purchases for her if they didn't fit just right. She was a well oiled shopping machine. She always had stacks of her catalog favorites next to her sewing chair. The pages were always folded down to mark her favorites, or things that she planned on ordering.
Several times while she was alive she mentioned that she would like to get a computer. In her younger days she was a master typist, and although she didn't like to get out of her comfort zone, she was a very quick learner. I know she would've loved the world of online shopping!
Do you remember any of your mother's or grandmother's shopping from catalogs? If so, please share!

Mark's mom is in a wheelchair (has been since he was 18 mo. old -- polio) and pretty much all of her shopping was done by catalog and telephone. She had this most amazing catalog collection ever and I remember LOVING to go through her stack whenever we were visiting.
Grandma! What a cutie. When I saw that picture on your blog it made me so happy. She was a shopping queen, looks like we all inherited that gene but it skipped with MOM!
The big catalog for our family was the JCPenny catalog. My mom would order a ton of our clothing from it right before school started. I used to go through the womens section and look at all the cool stuff I could wear once I got older.
Also the JCPenny Christmas catalog was pretty much sacred. We looked at that one for hours, picking out what we wanted Santa to bring.
I haven't had good luck with shopping online. Nearly everything I have bought online, I end up sending back because it isn't as nice as I thought it would be. Usually the items appear nice and then are really cheap when you see them in person.
I do a ton of shopping for my office online though!
I haven't fully converted to online shopping for clothing, but for dvd's and such I usually find good deals that I don't have to worry about sizing.
By the way...you should be a columnist...you have such a way with words.
Yeah, ha ha, Christmas was the ultimate catalog shopping display. I still wear those purple kitty-cat bathrobes she gave us whenever I go home.
Come to think of it my mom did a lot of catalog shopping growing up since we lived an hour from Provo. Now that I live 45 minutes from the closest mall, Target, Sam's Club, etc. I have realized why she hated shopping so much. I remember curling up with the big JCPenney catalog and picking out my school clothes. My mom did a little shopping out of Chadwicks too, but I was never a fan. All I can say, is thank goodness for online shopping!
Oh Grandma Cook, always a fancy woman. Sears and JC Penny's at Christmas were my favorites. I could look at those toy pages forever!
I like to shop online now but I agree that it can be frustrating. Although sometimes I'll order a little of whatever just so I'll get something cool in the mail. My favorite is to order from the church distribution center. They never charge shipping!
Oh my heck! We have a JCPENNY catalog from the 70'S It's great!!! Maybe one day I will scan some of the fun things from it and do a blog post. It's great!
ummm....I still shop from catalogs. What does that say about me? I s'pose that Grandma Cook and I are kindred spirits. I do love the smell of a good JC Penney's fall catalog....Spring's not half bad either. Victoria's Secret, Pottery Barn, Land of Nod- bring it on! I know I could just as easily shop them online, but I prefer the more tangible approach - and the smell, did I mention the smell? Also, I whole-heartedly agree with your Easter musings.
